WOODLAND, Calif. (AP) — For a few frenzied weeks, beekeepers from around the United States truck billions of honeybees to California to rent them to almond growers who need the insects to pollinate the state’s most valuable crop. But as almond trees start to bloom, blanketing entire valleys in white and pink flowers, so begin beehive thefts that have become so prevalent that beekeepers are now turning to GPS tracking devices, surveillance cameras and other anti-theft technology to protect their precious colonies. Hive thefts have been reported elsewhere in the country, most recently three hives containing about 60,000 bees taken from a grocery chain’s garden in central Pennsylvania. They happen at a larger scale and uniquely in California this time of year because bees are most in demand d...[Read More]
Packed onto the slopes of the Sierra Nevada is a precious source of water for California — a frozen reservoir that climate change is already transforming. As the planet warms, the spring snowpack is dwindling. The snow is creeping up mountainsides to higher elevations, melting earlier in the year and seeping into dry soils rather than washing into rivers and streams that feed reservoirs. The risks are no longer futuristic or theoretical: The state’s projections for how much water to expect from the Sierra Nevada were so far from reality last spring that reforming the process has become increasingly urgent. Outer space is crowded. Not just with billionaires, but also space junk in orbit: old rocket bodies, defunct satellites, tools and other metal pieces. Davis-based startup Yolo Robotics aims to recycle those scraps in zero gravity. John Shepard, the startup’s cofounder and chief technology officer, spent 10 years in Silicon Valley developing high-performance motion control systems in aerospace. In 2021, when NASA put out a call for proposals on how to recycle space debris, he brainstormed with his friend Graham Ryland, who asked, “Wouldn’t it be cool to shape a blob of molten metal in space?” Keep reading this article at comstocksmag.com

Agtonomy co-founder and CEO Tim Bucher was born and raised on a farm and was deep into his own farming business when he took a computer course while at UC Davis and got hooked. It was that parallel agriculture/technology career that led him to start Agtonomy, a hybrid autonomy and tele-assist service startup that turns tractors and other equipment into autonomous machines to provide a low-cost, technology-enabled labor force for local farms to manage such equipment. It came out of stealth mode last September with $4 million in seed funding from a group of backers that included Grit Ventures, GV and Village Global. Grit and GV came back again to invest in the South San Francisco-based company and were part of a $5 million seed extension that includes backers like Toyota Ventures, Flybridge,...[Read More]
Launched over a year ago as a high-tech answer to California’s contact tracing woes, most people who test positive for COVID-19 still are not using the “exposure notifications” smartphone app to warn close contacts of potential infection, data show. The CA Notify app also does not yet have an option for people who test positive at home to share their diagnosis. That means thousands of infected people who want to anonymously alert others have no easy way to do so. Social science and public health experts said the contact tracing tool has potential but thus far has failed to live up to expectations — especially in a tech-savvy state where more than 4 million people have tested positive since CA Notify launched… Keep reading this article at MSN.com.
