SUMMARY:Nonlinear continuous predictors in regression models
DESCRIPTION:***Please Use Source Link Below to Confirm Event Details***\n  \n\nDetails\n\n\nOur March Meetup will be a remote gathering; the Zoom link will be posted the week before the event. \nIt’s easy to build regression models where the continuous predictors have a linear relationship to the outcome variable. However\, sometimes an important variable has a non-linear relationship to some outcome of interest; age is a common example. In situations like these\, neither simple linear regression nor a standard transformation (e.g.\, taking the log of the predictor variable) provides an adequate model. This talk describes several alternative techniques for handling predictors like these\, and illustrates how to implement them in R. \n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\nAbby Kaplan\n\nAbby Kaplan is a data scientist at Salt Lake Community College. Before joining SLCC\, she was an adjunct professor of linguistics at the University of Utah. She received her PhD in linguistics from UC Santa Cruz in 2010.

SUMMARY:Blockchain Networks: What are they!?
DESCRIPTION:***Please Use Source Link Below to Confirm Event Details***\n  \n\nDetails\n\n\nThe core movement behind this technology is looking at issues that are fundamentally human. Our property rights\, agency\, dignity\, the right not to be lied to\, and greater equality and inclusivity for a global community. \nOne of the most significant obstacles to wide-spread blockchain and cryptocurrency use is an accurate understanding of its implications and purpose. \nThis technology is tremendously powerful and it presents an opportunity to radically change our lives for the better; but that requires our collective interest and discernment to ensure it is being harnessed in the best interest of all.\n________________________________________________________________________________\nPlease be respectful. Any behavior that would attack\, threaten\, harass\, intimidate\, defame\, or be otherwise uncivil to anyone in the group is not welcome and will be excused from virtual meetings. \nThe aim of this group is to host conversations and speaking events that unpack and explore the why\, what\, and how of blockchain technology and its many use cases including the most well known\, cryptocurrencies. \nThe Rules of the group:\n1. All questions are valid and welcome\n2. Every participant treats one another with dignity and respect\n3. Honesty – speak your mind\, it is okay (even beneficial) to have differences of opinion or perspective so long as expressed appropriately. \nCooperative goals and learning aim to help:\n– Become familiar with terminology and concepts\n– Learn how to spot and avoid scams\n– Learn a methodical approach for identifying quality projects\n– Learn about the opportunities for passive income using verifiably safe blockchain\ntechnology and learning to assess & understanding risks.\n– Build informed & resilient community members\, businesses\, and non-profits \nNote: Scheduled groups begin timely out of respect for everyone’s time and other commitments. Events with planned topics\, talks\, presentations\, etc… will begin promptly\, so please be on time or early to receive the most information. If you are running behind\, we understand life happens and you are still welcome to join. The only caveat\, or disclaimer if you will\, is that once the event begins it becomes a little harder to notice when someone is trying to enter the room. So\, please be patient while you await approval to enter. It has happened that the alert isn’t noticed for many minutes\, I am sorry for this\, we really want everyone to take part. We ask your understanding that facilitating a group requires having one’s attention on several things simultaneously and we don’t always have a co-host to watch the “door”. \n*We are open to members of the community presenting topics of special interest. Please send direct message to Group Organizer to discuss\, and if approved organize the event.

SUMMARY:AI Empowerment vs. Security Risk: Navigating the AppSec Challenges of AI Agents
DESCRIPTION:***Please Use Source Link Below to Confirm Event Details***\n  \n\nDetails\n\n\nIn just a short span\, AI Agents and low-code development have transformed how businesses operate\, allowing users without coding backgrounds to create applications\, automate processes\, and streamline workflows. Business users are empowered as never before\, using tools that merge AI with productivity—from email and business intelligence to application development. But while these tools amplify efficiency\, they also introduce new security risks that challenge the traditional boundaries of IT and AppSec. \nAs security teams grapple with vulnerabilities like authorization misuse\, data leakage\, and the risk of exfiltration\, they must decide how to approach the widespread adoption of AI-driven tools and low-code platforms without stifling innovation. In this session\, we’ll explore recent research into the security challenges posed by AI agents and low-code development\, emphasizing the pitfalls that emerge when business users become app creators. We’ll also outline how AppSec teams can adapt their approaches to balance security with productivity\, ensuring they enable the business rather than block it.

SUMMARY:Machine Learning/Data Sciences/R
DESCRIPTION:***Please Use Source Link Below to Confirm Event Details***\nDetails\n\n\nSearching for a Job in the Age of Hype!\nThis month\, we’re trying something different with a change of venue. I’m hoping for more audience participation\, and I’d love to add your voice to our discussion.\nThere has been a lot of hype surrounding AI\, particularly in machine learning (ML)\, ChatGPT\, and even quantum computing. I’m interested in hearing about your personal experiences with job searching in AI\, ML\, and ChatGPT. While many blogs discuss this topic\, it would be valuable to survey people directly and gather their insights.\nLately\, I’ve come across posts claiming that anyone with some ML experience can easily find a job in the field. Or management drinking the AI KoolAid about how you can now replace half the programming staff with AI. However\, recent graduates with degrees specializing in machine learning often share their struggles\, including having to settle for positions far below their expectations.\nThis kind of hype isn’t new. We can recall the internet implosion of 2001. I remember 1992 when DEC launched the Alpha chip—a technical marvel that didn’t sell as expected. Or Arvind’s DataFlow architecture\, which was supposed to revolutionize CPU design by addressing the von Neumann bottleneck\, yet Motorola lost $50 million (at a time when that was a significant amount of money). And\, of course\, we’ve been “20 years away” from sustained nuclear fusion for the past 40 years.\nRemember\, to err is human\, but to really foul things up takes a computer. I think we are in “The Uncanny Valley” and will be there for quite a while. \nNB. The above image has been generated with ChatGPT!

Talks – Once a month we meet to have someone present on a topic related to generative AI. Speakers can range from industry leaders\, researchers\, startup founders\, subject matter experts and those with an interest in a topic and would like to share. Topics vary from technical to business focused. They can be on how the latest in generative models work and how they can be used\, applications and adoption of generative AI\, demos of projects and startup pitches or legal and ethical topics. The talks are meant to be inclusive and for a more general audience compared to the paper readings. \nIf you would like to be a speaker please contact:\nMatt White

SUMMARY:Packaging Permissions in Stored Procedures
DESCRIPTION:***Please Use Source Link Below to Confirm Event Details*** \n  \n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\nThe December Ohio North Database Training user group meeting will be held on Tuesday\, December 3rd\, 2024 at 5:00PM. This will be a HYBRID event and our featured speaker\, Erland Sommarskog\, will be joining us remotely from Sweden! \nYou’re welcome to come meet in-person at our usual meeting location at the Artemis offices at: \n6161 Oak Tree Blvd\, Ste 300\nIndependence\, OH 44131 \nAgenda: \n5:00 PM EST: Online and in-person meeting begins with a social hour. This is an unstructured hour where you can join us to catch up and meet other group members before the session starts. There will be pizza brought in for in-person attendees. \n6:00 PM EST: Updates and announcements\, followed by our feature presentation. See below for presentation details. \n7:30 PM EST: Optionally after the main presentations\, the in-person crowd may go out for snacks and drinks at a local establishment. \nWe hope to see you there! \n*Please note\, that we will be using Microsoft Teams for the online portion of this meeting. You may want to join a few minutes early to ensure you do not have any issues. If you are attending in person\, there are large TVs at the office\, and you do not need to bring a laptop or use Teams. \nFeatured Presentation: \nPackaging Permissions in Stored Procedures \nThe basic mechanism when we want to give users access to data or actions in SQL Server in a controlled way through stored procedure is ownership chaining. This is something we use every day as SQL workers\, although we may not be aware of it. Every once in a while\, we run into situations where it seems that it is not sufficient to put a statement in a stored procedure\, but that users need to be granted explicit permissions – something we may not always be comfortable with\, because that would permit the users to do things we do not want them to be able to. \nThere are two additional mechanisms in SQL Server we can employ in these situations: certificate signing and the EXECUTE AS clause. In this session I will start by exploring how ownership chaining works and its limitations. I will then proceed to explore the other two options and I will particularly focus on certificate signing\, as this is the preferred method. At first it may seem overly complex\, but I will show how it easily can be automated. EXECUTE AS may seem simpler\, but I will point out potential problems with it\, not the least if you try to use it on server level and consider to set the database as TRUSTWORTHY. This session is directed towards both developers and DBAs\, as this session deals with problems you may face in either roles. \n\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\n\n\nErland Sommarskog\n\nErland Sommarskog is an independent consultant based in Stockholm.
