SUMMARY:Discussion - Topic: Tracking health over debt
DESCRIPTION:***Please Use Source Link Below to Confirm Event Details***\n  \n\nDetails\n\n\nThis week’s topic: Tracking health over debt \nAs described in Thoughtworks Technology Radar Vol. #28. \nTracking technical debt is a perennial topic in software delivery organizations. What is technical debt and what is not? How do you prioritize it? And most importantly\, how do you express the value of paying it off to your internal stakeholders? Following the Agile Manifesto’s manner of reasoning — “while there is value in the item on the right\, we value the item on the left more” — we like the idea of tracking health over debt. The folks at REA in Australia share a good example of what such health tracking can look like. They track system ratings in the categories of development\, operations and architecture. \nFocusing on health instead of debt is a more constructive framing. It connects a team to the ultimate value of reducing debt and helps them prioritize it. Every piece of tackled technical debt should ideally be connectable to one of the agreed expectations. Teams should treat the health rating the same as other service-level objectives (SLOs) and prioritize improvements whenever they drop out of the “green zone” for a given category. \nZoom link will be added just before the event starts. \nDiscussion Resources : \nArticles and/or videos will be added usually a week before the event. Please read/watch them prior to the event as they are used to help with the discussion.

SUMMARY:Austin Gil: What's a dev gotta do to make a div around here?
DESCRIPTION:***Please Use Source Link Below to Confirm Event Details***\n  \n\n\n\nDetails\n\n\nAn in-depth journey following your code from conception in the editor through the awkward build processes into deployment pipelines out to the real world of public internet and off to its final destination\, being rendered in a user’s browser. \nThe internet has become a complex place. With the advent of frameworks\, build tools\, and deployment services\, the distance between developers and browsers is growing. Developer Experience has improved\, but with these abstractions\, we’ve introduced layers of obscurity. \nThis talk is intended for web developers of all skill levels\, as it fills the gaps in knowledge of how our work works. The information is not critical\, but it’s fascinating nonetheless. \nWe’ll take a deep dive into what happens after you hit save\, what processes take place to get your code transformed for production\, how does it get deployed\, how it gets to the user\, and the steps the browser takes to actually render the page. \nBy the end of this talk\, you should have a better understanding of the following:\n– Dev servers\n– Bundlers\n– Transpilers\n– CI/CD\n– DNS Lookups\n– TCP/IP\n– SSL/TLS\n– HTTP\n– Critical Render Path\nAll levels of experience are welcome. \n*** The Zoom link will be posted closer to the event\, but only visible if you RSVP.

SUMMARY:Enriching Kafka Applications With Contextual Data and SQL Streaming
DESCRIPTION:***Please Use Source Link Below to Confirm Event Details***\n  \n\nDetails\n\n\nDeveloping high-performance large-stream processing applications is a challenging task. Choosing the right tool(s) is crucial to get the job done; as developers\, we tend to focus on performance\, simplicity\, and cost. However\, the cost becomes relatively high if we end up with two or more tools to do the same task. Simply put\, you need to multiply development time\, deployment time\, and maintenance costs by the number of tools. Kafka is great for event streaming architectures\, continuous data integration (ETL)\, and messaging systems of record (database). However\, Kafka has some challenges\, such as a complex architecture with many moving parts\, it can’t be embedded\, and it’s a centralized middleware\, just like a database. Moreover\, Kafka does not offer batch processing\, and all intermediate steps are materialized to disk in Kafka. This leads to enormous disk space usage. In this talk\, we will address these challenges and how real-time stream processing can be used to enhance Kafka pipelines by simplifying deployment and operations with ultra-low latency and a lightweight architecture making it a great tool for edge (restricted) environments. This talk aims to take your Kafka applications to the next level. The combination of Real-time storage and computing provides a unique synergy that enables applications to address real-time use cases at any scale. \nSpeaker: Fawaz Ghali\, PhD\nBio: Fawaz Ghali is Principal Data Science Architect and the Head of Developer Relations at Hazelcast with +22 years of experience in DevRel\, cloud\, enterprise software development and deployment\, ML/AI and real-time intelligent applications\, management and leadership. He holds a PhD in Computer Science and has worked in the private sector as well as in academia and research. He has published +45 scientific peer-reviewed papers in the fields of ML/AI\, data science and cloud computing on Google Scholar. Fawaz is a renowned expert with +200 talks and presentations at global events and conferences.

SUMMARY:October AI\, Machine Learning & Data Science Meetup
DESCRIPTION:***Please Use Source Link Below to Confirm Event Details***\n  \n\nDetails\n\n\nZoom Link \nhttps://voxel51.com/computer-vision-events/october-ai-machine-learning-data-science-meetup/ \nGlacier Monitoring with Computer Vision Models\nThe temporal variability of marine-terminating glacier front positions provides valuable information on the state of the glaciers. Therefore\, the position of these fronts is an important parameter influencing the accuracy of climate models. To obtain the position\, satellite imagery has traditionally been analyzed by hand. As the amount of satellite imagery and the need for accurate climate models is increasing\, deep learning techniques are applied to extract the glacier front position from satellite images. In this talk\, state-of-the-art models for this purpose will be discussed. \nNora Gourmelon is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg working on AI for Earth. Her main focus lies on the segmentation of glacier calving fronts in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite imagery. \nAutomatic Prompt Optimization with “Gradient Descent” and Beam Search\nLarge Language Models (LLMs) have shown impressive performance but their abilities remain highly dependent on prompts which are hand written with onerous trial-and-error effort. We propose a simple and nonparametric solution to this problem\, Automatic Prompt Optimization (APO)\, which is inspired by numerical gradient descent to automatically improve prompts\, assuming access to training data and an LLM API. Our experiments suggest this method can outperform prior prompt editing techniques and improve an initial prompt’s performance by up to 31%\, by using data to rewrite vague task descriptions into more precise annotation instructions. \nReid Pryzant is a Senior Research Scientist at Microsoft\, and former Computer Science PhD at Stanford University advised by Dan Jurafsky. His work has won outstanding research awards from CVPR\, AAAI\, and the National Science Foundation.

Do not worry if you don’t understand everything. This chapter is just an overview. \n– Read Chapter 2 very carefully and do as many problems as possible. Mastering this chapter is essential for understanding QC. If the material is unfamiliar\, then I recommend this book\nhttps://www.amazon.com/Quantum-Computing_-An-Applied-Approach/dp/3030832732/ref=sr_1_1. Section III contains an accessible introduction to the required math. \n– Chapter 3 is optional. Read the parts that interest you. \n– Quantum Computation is covered in chapters 4\, 5\, and 6. We are working through problems and making model quantum circuits with qiskit. \n– If you want to skip QC and go directly to Quantum Information\, go to Chapter 8. \n– Chapter 7 is an overview of technologies used to build quantum computers. It is optional in our study plan.
